Thanks to a wide 22x zoom range, the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD lens can capture anything from wide landscapes, narrow portraits, or distant wildlife. Tamron is the first lens manufacturer to achieve this zoom range, previously superzoom's only managed 18-300mm.
The optical construction of the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens consists of 16 lens elements in 11 groups. The lens ultilises an array of special lens elements including three low dispersion lens elements, two moulded glass aspherical lens elements, and a hybrid aspherical lens elements. These elements effectively reduces aberrations, including chromatic aberrations and distortion, thereby assuring outstanding image quality. Optimum power distribution among the individual lens element groups achieves both the optical performance and the compact size necessary for an ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom lens that boasts 400mm focal length.
A nifty VC optical image stabilisation system rated at 2.5 stops helps to reduce unwanted camera shake/movements to provide sharp pictures when zoomed or when shooting in low light.
The Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD lens uses Tamron’s exclusive HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) autofocus motor. The HLD focus motor produces a large amount of torque, and adjusts motor rotation from low to high speed to enable accurate and quiet focusing. The HLD motor takes up less space thanks to its small size and circular arc shape that allows the size of the lens to be reduced.
Despite the 22x zoom 18-400mm focal length, the lens is light and small with a total length of 121.4mm and a weight of 705g. This makes the lens perfect for traveling and can be mounted on a neckstrap worn camera without putting on to much strain.
A short minimum focus distance of 45cm and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9 enables macro-style close-up photography.
With the optional TAP-in Console you can connect your lens to a pc via USB connection. Once connected you can effortlessly update your lens’s firmware as well as fine-tune the autofocus and vibration compensation.
